As I observe some of you teach, I see several clever uses of technology. How do you see information technology influencing your teaching? Have you used technology to engage, inform, or increase students research or critical thinking skills? How does it help? How does it hinder? Describe some ways that you have incorporated tech into your teaching, and how you see yourself using these tools when you have your own classroom
I see information technology influencing teaching by in a large way increasing student engagement. Students are much more engrossed in a lesson when they are given a technological manner in which to learn the information. Even something as basic as a PowerPoint presentation can increase the engagement of students. I think the PowerPoint are a great tools to use if you are giving not to the students. They enable you to connect visuals and embed them in the notes so the students can make that connection between what they are hearing, writing and reading to a visual representation as well. I see technological information also enhancing lessons. As a teacher you are able to use many more resources when you have more technology. Some of the examples I have seen or used in teaching have been web interactives and video segments.
I have been trying to embrace technology in the classroom while in Westerly High School. I have been privileged to be able to use smart board technology to enhance my lessons. Not only to I have the capability of using web quests, video segments and powerpoints but I have also been able to draw on anything I am showing to the students. that aspect of being able to add last minute ideas to a lesson I think is impotant to teaching. For instance, I was recently able to draw in information on my power point slides to help students better understand the importance of atomic structure in connection to the way a mineral will fracture. I was able to use an ELMO recently to show a mineral dissolving in the presence of HCL in a way that everyone in the class could see the reaction. I also have recently been able to use educational video segments to provide the students with the information about DNA in a visual manner.
I think technology can aid in teaching in many ways. It offers the students an outlet to be hands on. I gives the teacher more tools in the classroom to use to present information. I do think that sometimes technology can hinder a lesson. The ways in which I have found that Technology can hinder a lesson occurs when the technology does not work in some manner. I have experienced this first hand in my student teaching in Westerly. For example, sometimes
the smartbord will freeze up. In these time a teacher needs to be prepared to deliver the lesson in another manner until it can restart or for the whole lesson. I think technology in the classroom requires a teacher to be educated in technology on the spot problem solving and requires a teacher to be flexible in general.
